As the class dwindled on Cynara sighed as she watched the hands on the clock tick slowly. She’d already read the lesson for today while everyone else was still going. Occasionally, the teacher would go quiet from his yammering, but not in this moment. He was talking about something he thought was relevant, but Cyn wasn’t listening. For some reason, she had the urge to look behind her…and before she realized it, her eyes were glued to him. His glare was steadied on his hands & he was damn sure concentrating hard. Even while looking down at something that obviously intrigued him, he looked evil. His wet hair was now somewhat dry & his delicate features were rigid. A wrinkle was over his brow and his mouth was tight with anger. She wished he would glance up once just so that she could see those gorgeous emerald eyes. More curiosity stung her and she finally stared down into his hand to see what he was so mesmerized by. Her jaw dropped slightly as a chill ran up her spine. There was a pencil, cupped in his hand, but that wasn’t what had thrown her for a loop. The pencil was standing straight up, with the eraser in the air. The point of the pencil was planted on the desk as it twirled slowly; making marks where it stood, but his hands weren’t touching it.
Just as she thought to turn away, his eyes shot up to her & the look he gave her shook her to the very core. She gasped as the pencil fell over & turned around in her chair to face front. Dean sat upright angrily as he gripped the sides of his desk once more. The heat of his sultry glare was burning a hole through her, but she wasn’t stupid enough to turn around. Not this time. Livvie turned & looked at her, only to see she was breathing a bit heavily in fear.
“Are you ok?” Her voice startled Cynara so much that she nearly jumped out of her seat.
“Fine.” She replied, but her voice came out shaky, something she was trying to avoid. She wanted to sound confident. The bell suddenly rang, startling her as she grabbed her things & rushed from the room. Her sneakers squealed as she hustled down the hallway and around the corner to her locker. There was no stopping her because she was not having a confrontation with the “creepy guy” of the school. She took a quick glance behind her to see he wasn’t following her. Hell, he was nowhere in sight. He wasn’t even following her and she was damn sure relieved of that. Looking down at her schedule, she saw her locker number scribbled on the side. With just her luck, it so happened to be three lockers down. With her locker insight, she scrambled over to it. She didn’t want to be late for any class on her first day. The warning bell rang as she placed her books into her locker and slammed it. Some part of her thought she’d see Dean standing there with a menacing stare, like a good book she’d read, but no. Everyone was hustling to class as others stood around talking as any school would have. She took off to her class without hesitation.

“One day down…a billion more to go.” Cynara replied sarcastically as she walked quickly through the empty “park”. To be honest, it wasn’t a park, but it was a short cut to her house that she’d discovered during the weekend they moved. It led right to her huge yard. She liked to think of it as a park to ease the fear rippling through her as she walked alone. The leaves crunched and squished at the same time as she walked over them. The fact that they were wet made it a tad slippery to walk over them. The rain had never let up and that was annoying to her because she was wet. The water was freezing as it poured over her and the fact that the wind was blowing fiercely only added to the already frigid drops. She let out a huge mouthful of air as she shivered and saw her breath in front of her. That sure indicated how cold it was getting if nothing else did. Although she had her gloves, hat, and a scarf on, she was still freezing. It made her march through the mucky woods even faster. Atleast her warm home was there waiting for he—even if she was gonna be alone. She hoped her mother was there cooking lunch while the table was already done. A tiny smile teased her lips at the thought of her father there waiting as well, reading a paper in his favorite chair. Her thoughts were instantly interrupted by a rustling she thought she heard behind her. She stopped abruptly and circled where she was. Her eyes darted in every direction, quickly scanning the area, but there was nothing but silence.
Her breathing had grown heavy as her heart raced because she hated being alone. Especially in a weird place she didn’t know. The fact that it was gloomy out and it seemed as if the no showing sun was setting only made it worse.
“C’mon Cynara, it’s just the wind…or a squirrel.” She mumbled as she gathered enough of herself to walk again. She turned back to the direction she was heading and saw a shadowy figure standing right in front of her. She screamed as she stumbled back and felt something thick behind her. Ragged breaths terrified her, until she realized they were her own. She felt the thick object behind her, only to fell the wet oak off a very thick tree. Letting off a tiny sigh relieved her until her eyes locked onto the shadowy figure that was still standing in front of her. He pushed his hoodie of to reveal his face & she trembled.
The sounds of his footsteps slowly advancing toward her made her heart nearly jump out of her chest. She was frozen with fear & couldn’t muster up the strength to move. Tremors ran through her as he stopped inches in front of her.
“Are you scared?” Dean asked, his voice was very husky and ragged. There was a tease at his lips that she spotted, even though his eyes were menacing and dead set on her. She could feel his cold breath as he spoke & all she could do was stare at him. She swallowed hard and he chuckled.
“I know you’re scared…” he said moving closer to her and she cringed as his body brushed up against her.
“I can smell it on you.” He said moving to her ear and she shut her eyes tight. Just feeling her tremble beneath him brought a full smile to his face. He backed away to see the terror in her eyes—it was just priceless. “Please…” she begged and that amused him. As the pour over her, he watched as she quivered where she stood.
“Are you going to lie to me now?” The question caught her of guard and stumped her as she watched his smile fade. “What?” She frowned inquisitive.
“You’re going to beg and tell me you didn’t see anything right?” he said a bit peeved, but he didn’t let her answer. “You were gonna tell me you didn’t see my pencil twirling on its own on the desk right?!” he shouted and she stumbled again, tripping over the stump of the tree & falling into the mud, dropping everything.
“When you know and I know that you saw it clear as day.”
“I won’t….” “Say anything? Who’s gonna believe you anyway right? It’s not like I’m the freak of the school by any means huh?” he asked sarcastically and she could tell he was more than a little annoyed. The whispers that went around school didn’t fall on deaf ears, he knew what everyone said about him and he seemed to like it. Hell, he never responded to it & the fact it kept everyone away from him was a plus.
The tears than ran down Cynara’s cheeks were gone in an instant because the rain washed them away. As much as she wanted to beg & plead, it was adamant that there was no reason to. The person in front of her had no intent on letting her slide by. There was no way to backpedal as well to say she hadn’t seen what she in fact did see. He’d said exactly what she’d saw.
“I…I…” “You saw it. Your eyes weren’t playing tricks on you.”
Her eyes stayed glued to him as he hovered over her.
“I can do stuff like this—“ he said forming his hands into a ball and the raindrops that were falling hovered there as if an invisible force field held every pelt in place. Cynara’s eyes widened in fear as her jaw dropped a tad. The color of his eyes had now changed to a deep ruby red. He raised his hands as he drew the ball of rain back. He was now in a position to throw the thing straight at her. The fear that kept her frozen in place needed its ass kicked, because although her mind screamed to run, her body was numb. Without hesitation he chucked it at her. The way the thing was flying at her, she knew it would slam dead in face & hurt like hell. She shut her eyes tightly as she clenched the moist dirt beneath her.
After a moment she peeked because nothing happened. The ball of rain was hovering there and she could see the tiny drops inside floating around. It was intriguing & amazing at the same time. The fear she felt was very real, but so was her curiosity. She slowly stretched to reach for it, but glanced at Dean. He was staring at her with the most peculiar look on his face. She drew her hand back quickly as he opened his hands and the rain he’d collected hovered there as he smiled before looking at her. After a few seconds, the rain fell to the ground and she watched as he stalked over and knelt to her eye level.
“If you ever tell anyone…” “I swear I won’t say a thing!!” she shouted cutting him off. After seeing what she did she knew better. Hell, she wasn’t stupid—she was taught better than that.
With that, he stood up and she knew that was her exit. After grabbing her things, she ran on her wobbly legs towards her house. The rain hammered her in the face & her heart was racing, but she wasn’t turning back to look. She could hear the swishing of her feet hitting the wet dirt beneath her as she darted through the trees. It seemed as though her house had been miles away, but in reality she was now in her yard. Just seeing her huge house made her feel a bit at ease. It was like he was out there counting, but she’d made it to base. As if they were playing a deadly game of catch. She ran up her back porch and prayed her parents were home because she didn’t want to be alone. After fumbling around in her pocket, she finally pulled out her house keys & shakily stuck the key in the lock before opening her door. She slipped off her muddy sneakers & dropped her book bag before running through the empty kitchen into the living room. She stopped dead in her tracks to realize she was alone. Her parents weren’t there. There was no hot meal waiting, no nothing. The house was warm, but empty as always.
Who was supposed to keep her safe?
“You were supposed to kill her, not tell her your secret.” Ayla replied slithering up behind Dean as he stood in the cold wet woods.
“She won’t say anything.” “Alastair won’t be pleased to hear what you did.”
Dean whipped around to see Ayla standing there. Her dark black hair was drenched and her yellowish eyes were glowing as she stared him dead in the eyes. That was the last thing he need right now. Her telling what he did. He would be in deep trouble if she did & she knew it.
“You wouldn’t do that to me would you Alya?” he asked glaring at her & a smiled teased her lips. He knew she liked making threats just to hold things over his head. She was like an annoying sister he wished he’s never had.
